Dozens of people, including journalists, were injured when police cane-charged frenzied crowds at the star-studded audio launch function here Friday of the Kamal Haasan-starrer ‘Dasavatharam’ that was attended by Hollywood star Jackie Chan and Bollywood icon Amitabh Bachchan.
Chief Minister M. Karunanidhi and Kamal Haasan were also present during the launch.
There was confusion at the Nehru Stadium, as thousands of passes had been distributed among the members of the Tamil cinema industry, fans of Kamal Haasan, the top brass of music company Sony BMG and leading lights of the ruling DMK regime, said a witness.
“Tempers ran high – on the side of the police as well as the fans. While the fans thought they had been cheated of a peek at the stars, the policemen felt they were doing a thankless job confounded by poor organisation,†says A.R. Laxman, a music company executive attending the function.
Media persons who had flown in from Mumbai and Delhi were not only kept out of the stadium because it was already packed, quite a few had to bear the brunt of police canes.
Police officials, however, expressed helplessness.
“Our job was to prevent any untoward incident to the VIPs. Would journalists have forgiven us if something bad had happened?†asked a flustered police official.
Matters were made worse by the presence of a large number of ruling DMK workers.
A spokesperson of Sony BMG, which has produced the film’s music, said they were unaware of the mayhem outside as they were present backstage.
Earlier, Jackie Chan and Bachchan where whisked from the Anna International Air Terminal in bullet-proof limousines to the Taj Coromandel Hotel by producer Oscar Ravichandran.

Jyothika and Surya will be making an appearance in a short documentary for creating awareness for the need for child education and increasing literacy levels in Tamil Nadu.
After her marriage with actor Suriya and their baby Diya, this is Jyothika’s first public appearance. The actress has not participated so far in any public events too.
The short film being filmed on the theme based on “Education for the girl child.” Actors Madhavan and Vijay will also be making their appearance in the shot film. The film will involve candid interviews on literacy with stars. The documentary is being produced by the help of Thangam Thennarasu, Tamil Nadu School Education Minister. Superstar Rajinikanth starrer Kuselan has been sold for 64 crores to Pyramid Saimeera according to the latest buzz doing rounds in the Tamil industry.
Though several corporate houses tried to take the distribution rights of the movie, Pyramid Saimira clinched the deal.
The competators for obtaining the distribution rights for Kuselan has been Pyramid Saimeera, Adlabs, and Ayngaran films and Pyramid Saimeera has emerged the victorious of the lot by obtaining the combined rights for Tamil and Telugu for a whopping 64 crores.
Kuselan which is the remake of Malayalam superhit Katha Parayumbol has been remade in Tamil as Kuselan and Telugu as Kuseludu. The movie will also star Pasupathy, Meena, Prabhu, Vadivelu, Santhanam and Livingston in the Tamil version. It is said that two songs sung by Shankar Maha Devan and Hariharan have been already completed for Kuselan.
